Nickens Nkoso

Kasaï Masaï is led by Voodoo King Nickens Nkoso percussionist, singer and dancer. Nickens was born into a musical family and studied singing and percussion as a child, receiving tuition from his father and grandfather.

Performance Profile

When he moved to London in 1992, he was invited to perform with most of the top Congolese artists touring in the UK. He was a special guest with Mose Fan Fan’s Somo Somo at The Barbican (2000) and with Samba Mapangala (Orchestra Virunga) at The Forum (1999). Nickens was also a guest on the latter’s studio recordings during this period.

He has worked with Koko Kanyinda’s Soukous Kumbele and Robert Maseko's Congobeat for some years, appearing with them at many festivals including Notting Hill Carnival, and the BBC3 World Music Day.

More recently the band appeared on Andy Kershaw’s world music programme “World & New”.

Nickens is Kanda Bongoman’s sideman and regularly appears as a singer and dancer on his UK's and World tours.

Nickens is also founder of the Soukous Academy Project.
